PORSCHE 911 RS – REPLICA
Car was originally a Porsche 912 1969, Red, 1.6ltr – 5 speed
– which in itself is still a very sought after car, super rare !!
If you’re looking for a very original car with all the
correct bits, this is not the car for you, this car would suit someone that wants
the iconic RS look in a fun reliable cheap-to-run car, or understands what the
car could be with a bit of effort.
In current form the car grabs a lot of attention everywhere
it goes, and is quite fun to drive, handles and stops astonishingly well. You
really know you’re driving a classic as the webers growl, it is in it’s element
on a windy road. Cheap to run as the engine is basically a Type 1 VW engine (so
close to the Porsche 912 1.6 engine) gearbox is the desirable Porsche 5 speed “Dogleg
1st”, brakes are off a later model Carrera and stop very well.
My wife and I love this car and we often take it on quiet country
back roads and it has served us well. We have covered a lot of miles and it has
been quite reliable considering the age.
I feel the new owner would have a few choices:

is
This would have to be the cheapest “long bonnet” car I have
ever seen, they do not come up often, see how many ads for “wanted” there are
for this era Porsche and you’ll see what I mean. From 1974 on, they changed the
look, anything in this pre 74’ era is super desirable.
Continue the RS
Replica look
For someone that does not want to pay $70-$120K for a well
sorted RS Replica, this is a great start. Yes – it will need new paint / body
work, a bigger engine etc., but you can do this at your own pace. These are
only going up in value fast (over 30% rise in the last 12 months) so it’s a
good project to grab now and slowly gather some bits as they pop up at the
right price.
Race Car or RSR
For someone that wants a race car, you really can’t go
wrong, this model is the most desirable shape, nimble and the lightest of the
lot (880kg!!), I would simply get a roll cage, upgrade brakes / suspension /
engine and you have a potent combo that looks the part and would be a blast to
drive.
912 Red – back to
original
For someone that loves that 60’s Porsche look, you really
can’t go wrong in red !! The car would need a few bits, not that many, and of
course a respray / panel work etc.
I have included a photo of what it looked like once upon a
time.
Faults / Issues – Please read this section before calling, I
really want the right owner for this car and don’t want to waste your time…or
mine, so read carefully please, I’m being brutally honest !!
Paint – though it looks great from a few meters away, it has
got lots of faults, I suspect a previous owner painted it in his garage in what
I believe is air-dry enamel
Body/Rust repairs – The car has evidence of previous rust
repairs, the rear seat floor has at some point rusted out (very common) and a
panel has been inserted to repair, so you can leave it as is (has been that way
for years) but if you’re going to restore or want the rear seats back in, you
will need a rear foot well section, this panel is $229 to buy new. To be clear,
I have had the car for a few years, and I have not seen any rust popping out,
you can continue to drive the car as is, I’m just saying the car has had rust
repaired in a few places.
Engine – The engine starts and runs fine, has had a valve
adjustment recently and oil / filter change. However, I feel it could benefit
from a tune from someone that knows Webers, I’ve been told it would make more
power. Again to be clear, the engine is a VW Type 1 4cyl, I was told it was a
1916cc, but I have never confirmed that, so I’m selling it as a 1.6. One point
of interest, it has twin-plug heads, which are very rare!! Also Porsche rocker
covers, also rare !! Looks the part with all the gear / webers. These are also
getting hard to come by, so if are going to put a Porsche 6 cyl in, then I feel
you could get $3-4K for this engine as it’s a good unit.
Gearbox – It’s a Porsche dogleg 5 speed – I’ve been told they
are quite rare as a dogleg, shifts ok, actually quite fun to drive
Brakes – These are off a later model Carrera and stop very
well !!
Generally, the car is far from a show quality example, but
to be fair, it still looks great, and people just love that old classic shape.
