There cannot be many
genuine Original low mileage MG Metro Turbo’s left that have only covered a sensible
73,000 miles from new that have never been painted or modified or messed about
with in any way. Well this beautiful original car is all of them things. This
Turbo is a genuine survivor and has spent many years in dry storage and has
only covered 400 miles in the last 12 years. It’s totally standard and original
with all its original features, Even down to its original supplying dealer
number plate where it was registered in Haverford west Rover in 1989.

It’s hard to believe
that out of the 21,000 MG metro turbos made that there are only 24 currently
taxed and on the road. Unfortunately, I think a huge majority of these cars
lost their engines to Minis as it was a very popular to put this much sort
after turbo set up into the classic mini as it was a straight fit.

The MG Metro Turbo was a leader for its day with the
Lotus Engineering assisted design for the very comprehensive changes that were
done to the engine which was very capable of handling the modest 93 bhp the
standard engine was quoted at, although many actually delivered closer to 100
in standard unmodified form. Later tuned race cars would push that power to
200bhp, a massive power level for that period and even more so for a 1300cc
engine!

Other positive features included powerful servo assisted
brakes using four pot (piston) calipers and ventilated discs up front. The
Turbo also came with a body kit that provided a front spoiler and four wheel
spats to go with the MG Metro rear spoiler and this together with the use of
Turbo only specific larger 13” alloy wheels and low profile tyres the
individual look was enhanced considerably.

The engine was fitted with a Garrett T3 turbo on a
specially designed and cast exhaust manifold. Compressed air was delivered to
the single carburettor that was specially modified to run with pressurized air
by having special sealing and a variable rate fuel pressure delivery to ensure
a constant positive 4psi fuel delivery pressure whatever the operating pressure
was. The engine was also significantly strengthened with materials and
processes common to competition engines with many Turbo only parts such as the
cylinder head, pistons crankshaft, block, sodium filled exhaust valves, etc.
This was a unique engine yet when fitted into the car it didn’t look that
different.

The Engine and
running gear are very good with the engine being very strong with excellent oil
pressure. The Clutch and gear change are all very smooth and the Turbo boosts
correctly and pulls very well with no smoke or anything untoward, It starts
easily either hot or cold and is actually quite easy to drive. All the
electrics work as they should .   

The bodywork on the Turbo
is superbly original and doesn’t hide anything, Like I say it’s never seen any
repairs or paint. Its spent many years in dry storage and has picked up a few
battle scars so has random surface rust patches in places but these are strictly
surface only and very minor, some laquer peel which is probably at its worse
around the roof area, I have tried to picture these but it’s hard to show on
the camera. It would be a shame to paint the body but obviously to get into
showroom condition these would need to be addressed. Having said that the metro
shines up well and looks good, it could easily be used every day and wouldn’t
look out of place at any classic car show.

The interior is Excellent
and everything still looks pretty much like new, seats, carpets and head lining
are all original and in excellent order. The radio is still fully functional as
are all the clocks and gauges.

Obviously
approaching 30 years old so may need ongoing maintenance and love.

To sum up the
overall condition of the car is stunningly original and not messed with at all.
It’s a true survivor car that’s the hardest to find these days. I would love to
keep hold of it as in my opinion these cars are going to be worth twice what
they are now in a couple of years but due to too many other projects and
classics the Metro turbo must go.

The metro has a long
MOT until May 2018 so is ready to use.
