Description 1953 Matchless G80S, ride-restore, good runner with V5C

1953 Matchless G80S 500cc

Here is a fine running ride or restore example of the popular Jampot Matchless 500cc single - The G80S

This machine has been unused for a long while. Since it had good compression, turned freely and had been stored with an engine full of oil I decided to clean the carb and get it running.

After the carb had been ultrasound cleaned and new taps & pipes fitted the old girl fired up a treat.

The engine sounds great and settles to a nice steady tick-over.

There is no smoke and no oil leaks or strange noises. Oil circulates & returns well.

The bike is more or less ready to go back onto the road . Everything is working well including dynamo, charging well, new battery and new AO regulator fitted.

Brakes are good especially the rear. Front is smooth but lacks a bit of bite. Smith’s speedometer is working. Gearbox and clutch are A1.

The bike is great to ride nice and smooth, beefy power , pulling well from low revs as only big British singles can!

The bike comes with an up to date V5C document. Registration number 793 UYT cannot be transferred to another vehicle.

Frame number is A2633, engine number is 53/G3LS 22599, both these numbers match the V5C doc.

The AJS & Matchless Club were unable to shed light on the bike’s history for some reason.

Date of registration is 01/01/1953 and the V5C states 7 former keepers since Jan 1953.

The bike is registered as an historic vehicle, therefore free road tax and is of course pre-60 MOT exempt.

Cosmetically there’s not much to say to describe the condition. It is as it looks in the pictures - old & scruffy looking.

All paint is in poor condition, all chrome is poor condition.

Rims are sound but rusted chrome -wise. Spokes are all very sound , not rusty, nipples are sound but with surface rust. Tyres are both old. Rear has plenty of life left in it if you fancied riding round on a 30+ year old tyre! Front will need replacing.

There is no fin damage on the engine.

Exhaust is rusty but serviceable.

Seat is serviceable but is adapted from a later model.

Side & centre stands are both fitted and are in excellent condition.

The only deterioration on the tinware I can find is on the tail section of the rear mudguard which has some rust bubbling through (ie more serious than light surface rust). Other than that the entire bike seems generally in very sound condition. I believe with a good service this bike could give Sterling service “as is” or of course be restored to beautiful condition without to much other than cosmetic work.

Don’t miss this well patinated old British thumper!

Selling as a good runner to service & ride or restore!
