Description Iconic 1966 NSU Spider rotary engined roadster - first Wankel
First rotary engined car with Wankel 3 lobe rotor - equivalent of 3 cylinder engine, deserves restoration. 30,469 miles on car - most likely original. Rear engine rated at 50 hp, 8000 rpm engine with single triangular rotor spins freely. Rack & pinion steering, front disc brakes, 4 speed floorshift. Previous owner raced one of these, had this car as an extra, needed to sell to fund new business venture. Prev. owner told me the engine was rebuilt by a Chicago shop but he never installed it in car. I put the engine in temporarily in order to design a complete exhaust system as none came with car - shown in photos, then got sidetracked by other projects.
Entire monocoque chassis in very good condition, as are door bottoms inside & out. I eliminated some light surface rust on several areas of the chassis but not all - only holes are in bottom front floor under gastank, battery box and small area in lefthand rear ignition module shelf - small welding jobs will fix those. Doors in very good condition & I rebuilt window lifts to fix pivots made of potmetal - replaced with machined/welded steel so lifts work better than new. Suspension is fully independent with swingaxle rear drive.
Doorpanels are in very good condition, driver's seat needs reupholstered, dash top has typical shrinkage cracks. Carpets & top need replacing, engine missing pressure & clutch plate (seller shorted me on these!) along with coupler between points & crankshaft - available from NSU club Germany.
Have receipt for over $250 spent for custom exhaust pipes & double muffler, see photo. Oil cooler, brake & clutch cyl rebuild kits included with all other parts shown in photos. Repair manuals and owners manual come with car along with club newsletters, other information on a DVD. I also made new keys for doors, trunklid & ignition and found a steering column master switchpod on Ebay Germany which can be adapted to fit column to replace the missing original one. The convertible top frame is shown in the last photo and it is complete - it folds & slides under the rear deck behind the seats. Gastank comes with car, there is no spare wheel. I did some dent removal but body has several small dings & ripples but no bondo. Trunk space is between engine compartment lid and trunklid, along with space under hood and behind seats. Trunklid has some rust around hinges which is visible when lid is open.
I made new bushings for control pedal module seen on floor. Can be seen by appointment. Sold with Bill of Sale only as that's what I got from PO as it came from Georgia which didn't have titles back then -it never had a title. I had to put "salvage" as Ebay doesn't have a "no title" declaration.
Many more photos of interior, underside of chassis, interior of doors, other areas available to serious buyers. Contact me thru Ebay for any questions, but ask before end of auction, not after. No trades. Car can be seen by appointment.
Car is sold as-is, where is. Buyer must arrange pickup - I can help load. Car rolls easily. As the car is advertised elsewhere, i reserve the right to end the auction early.
