Description 1949 AJS 18S, 500cc lovely runner, candlestick model V5C

1949 AJS 18S, 500cc, excellent runner NO RESERVE!
Here is a good old traditional British 500cc single with bags of character and in good working order ready for summer!
This old “Candlestick” AJS 18S starts easily and sounds lovely mechanically with no smoke, no rattles or knocks. It ticks over beautifully too. It is lovely to ride, good handling in general, good brakes, torquey smooth acceleration nice positive gearbox and good clutch. Dynamo is charging well (6V but with modern regulator unit fitted inside the old box). Smith’s Chronometric speedometer is working well.
The bike comes with V5C registration doc. Reg number is CSL 967, declared manufactured 1949. Frame number 48494 & Engine number 52/18 21241 both match the V5C and are factory original stampings.
The bike is of course MOT exempt and is registered as a Historic Vehicle so road tax is free!
Cosmetically the overall impression is of a nice tidy old bike, not a freshly restored or immaculate machine!
The enamel on the frame is generally very sound, a bit old looking with the inevitable chips here and there, some minor touch ups in places.
The petrol tank, mudguards and other tin items all have good quality enamel. The tank however has been pin-striped using stick-on gold “go-faster” lines. It looks ok from a distance!
The front wheel rim has excellent chrome, spokes and nipples are rustless type in clean dull condition. Front tyre is 50% worn Avon Speedmaster ribbed type.
Rear rim is also in excellent condition, rear spokes & nipples are also rustless type in dull ,clean condition. Rear tyre is an as new Avon Speedmaster SM MKII. The exhaust system is clean & presentable but a little dull and used looking. There is no fin damage on the engine. There is evidence of silicone having been applied externally to the base of the push-rod tubes so I imagine new seals will be required in due course!
The rider’s saddle appears to be a nice old , used item, the pillion is a repro.
This is a nice early example of an AJS swinging arm 500, still fitted with the original Candlestick units. A rare model because most of these were originally exported, the home market had to mostly make do with the rigid models!
Don’t miss this lovely characterful trad Brit 500!
